Tim’s Pond Journey: A Stream, a Bog Filter, and a Dream Realised

Tims DIY Pond

Hi Kev,

I just wanted to say thanks for all the tips I’ve picked up over the years of watching your channel. They gave me the confidence to tackle a pond I’d been dreaming about for a long time.

The main body of water is about 6 metres by 9 metres and just over 1 metre deep, with a 12-metre stream running into it. The first 5 metres of the stream are open for the fish, while the next 5 metres — which run under a little bridge — act as a bog/stream filter.

Here’s how the system works:

  • I pump water from the main pond, and it first goes under the deck/pier where the first stage of filtration happens through a pressurised filter.
  • From there, the water flows into the stream to be filtered again through the bog section.
  • The bog is about 5 metres by 1 metre by half a metre deep, and after that the water flows back into the stream for another 5 metres before rejoining the pond.
  • I can even bypass the pressurised filter if I want and send all the water through the stream filter instead.

In total, I added about 12 tonnes of rock and pebble, along with plants in the pond, the stream, and the bog. Over six weeks I slowly introduced 20 goldfish and 2 koi. That’s it for now — I don’t want to overload the system with too many fish.

Once again, thank you for all your advice over the years. It gave me the confidence I needed on this pond journey.

— Tim

G'day, I'm Kev. My pond and water garden started with simple aquariums. I have created many ponds and water gardens around our home: Fish ponds, Aquaponic systems, grey-water wetlands and bog filters. My favourite topic is water filtration.
