A $1,500 Backyard Pond on the Sunshine Coast — Built with Aussie Ingenuity

Here’s a brilliant example of what’s possible when you mix creativity, a few solid principles, and a bit of elbow grease.

This DIY pond build comes from a couple in their 50s living on the Sunshine Coast, QLD. Inspired by my content, they decided to finally make their dream pond happen — and nailed it for under $1,500.

“You inspired us to build a beautiful little pond here on the Sunshine Coast. The completed build is 3m by 2.5m including the waterfall, and .6m deep in the middle.”

They used a leftover piece of EPDM liner, an Aquascape waterfall box, and a submersible 3500L/hr pump — and even made their own skimmer box based on my intake bay system:

“We didn’t have enough liner to do an intake bay as originally planned, so the hubby made our own skimmer box using your principles — it’s working beautifully.”

Smart. Affordable. And totally achievable.

“We managed to do everything for under $1,500 — rocks and skimmer box included. We’re both in our mid-50s, and since we didn’t try to lift massive rocks, we managed just fine!”

They’re already planning to add goldfish and a sun chair to enjoy the view. Their only concern?
