One of the best parts of the Ozponds community is seeing how people around the world take the blueprint and make it their own.
This is Angus’ pond — tucked away in Scotland — and it’s a perfect mix of clever DIY, good whisky, and thoughtful design. Here’s how he upgraded a 10-year-old wildlife pond into something clear, healthy, and low-maintenance.
🛠️ The Backstory
Angus had an old wildlife pond — already home to a thriving population of smooth newts (which, by the way, are excellent little water quality indicators). But like a lot of older ponds, it needed a refresh. The goal was to:
- Improve water circulation
- Add natural filtration
- Keep it a safe haven for wildlife
- And make it look amazing
Enter: a Scottish–Australian collaboration.
With a bit of help from the Ozponds Blueprint (and the private community), Angus rebuilt his pond’s filtration system and added some creative flair while he was at it.

🍃 What He Built
Angus installed:
- An intake bay to gently pull water around the pond in a circular flow
- A bog filter system made from three whisky barrels (yes, really)
- A curvaceous rill (small stream) that returns water to the pond
- A gravel section that will eventually take on a Japanese garden vibe
- Water lilies to be trimmed back to the centre, giving open space and shade
“Thanks to Fettercairn Whisky, Glen Ord Whisky, and Jim Beam for the redundant casks… they smelled wonderful when empty!” — Angus
The water started clearing within days of the new setup running — always a good sign the bog is doing its job.
🦎 Wildlife First
This wasn’t just a pond makeover — it was a careful update with wildlife in mind. The smooth newts (which Angus says provide hours of amusement) continue to thrive, and the improved flow and filtration will keep their home healthier for years to come.
